2017 JAMES E. ANDERSON PENNSYLVANIA CONFERENCE ON JUVENILE JUSTICE 

 

The 2017 James E. Anderson Pennsylvania Conference on Juvenile Justice, sponsored by the Juvenile Court Judges' Commission, the Pennsylvania Council of Chief Juvenile Probation Officers, the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, and the Juvenile Court Section of the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges will be held November 15-17, 2017 at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers.

This annual conference is attended by juvenile justice professionals (Judges, Probation Officers, District Attorneys, Defenders, Victim Services representatives, providers of residential and community-based services and other vendors serving the juvenile justice system) from throughout Pennsylvania and nationally.

This year's training workshops will highlight practices, programs, and initiatives that exemplify best-practices related to the various components of Pennsylvania's Balanced & Restorative Justice mission and Juvenile Justice System Enhancement Strategy (JJSES). Offerings will be repeated in both the morning and afternoon sessions for conference participants. It offers the unique opportunity to network and participate in plenary sessions, workshops, professional caucuses, awards programs, and Resource Day.

Professional Caucuses

The conference will begin on November 15th, with opportunities for participants to join with colleagues from their area of specialty within Pennsylvania's juvenile justice system in Professional Caucuses, and to discuss issues of mutual concern and interest.

Juvenile Defender Training

Juvenile defenders from across Pennsylvania are invited to attend the Conference on Juvenile Justice, and participate in a separate training track developed exclusively for them on Wednesday, November 15th.

Youth Awards Program

The 2017 JCJC Youth Awards Program will honor young people selected as winners in the Creative Expression and Outstanding Achievement Contests. The theme for this year’s Youth Awards Program is "Positive Thoughts Lead to Positive Actions." Also, a highlight of this year’s program will be the presentation of the James E. Anderson Juvenile Justice Youth Scholarship Award to two deserving youth in recognition of their resiliency and accomplishments. This award is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Conference of State Trial Judges Juvenile Court Section.

 Guest Speaker

TJ Griffin PhotoT.J. Griffin, born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, is a former troubled teen whose life was touched by the juvenile justice system. Today he is the Founder of the Vision Program, a community leader, motivational speaker, at-risk youth advocate, actor, and entrepreneur. He travels to various youth facilities, detention centers, and programs across Pennsylvania educating, inspiring, and mentoring thousands of youth each year.

T.J. recently stepped into the world of acting where he won the lead role in the independent faith-based film “Choices” by JCFILMS.org, which tells the true story of author and speaker Ron James’ life battling 25 years of incarceration and drug addiction. The film is set for release in the fall of 2017. T.J. has been featured in many publications from local magazines, such as Lancaster Fine Living which honored him with the Innovator award for 2017, and the national publication SUCCESS magazine in August of 2016. He is also working on his first book, which is a self-help book for at-risk youth/young adults and youth care workers. Rapper/actor Ice T, of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, is a friend of T.J.’s who has been mentoring him on other developing projects in the television/film industry.

Conference Welcome and Morning Plenary Presentation

The Journey of a Transgender Youth ​

Nicole MainesIn 2015, Nicole Maines was featured in the New York Times Bestseller, Becoming Nicole: The Transformation of an American Family. The book shares the true story of Nicole (a transgender girl), her identical twin brother, Jonas, and their family’s journey to “understand, nurture, and celebrate the uniqueness in us all.” Throughout her journey, Nicole has also worked as a tireless advocate for transgender youth and adults. For her hard work and commitment, Nicole was named one of Glamour Magazine’s 50 inspiring women of the year, and she was also named one the 14 Most Fearless Teens of 2014.

 Rachel Levine PhotoDr. Rachel Levine is Physician General for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Dr. Levine graduated from Harvard College and the Tulane University School of Medicine. As Physician General, Dr. Levine has made significant strides combating the opioid epidemic and advocating on behalf of the LGBTQ population. She spearheaded the efforts to establish opioid prescribing guidelines and establish opioid prescribing education for medical students. She has also led an LGBTQ workgroup for the governor’s office which has worked to create programs and processes that are fair and inclusive in healthcare, insurance, and many other areas. Dr. Levine was recognized as one of NBC’s Pride 30, a national list of 30 people who are both members of and making a difference in the lives of the LGBTQ community.

Addressing the Opioid Epidemic

Joseph TroncaleDr. Joseph A. Troncale is the Medical Director at Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment Centers, Ephrata, PA. Dr. Troncale is a Board-Certified Physician in both Addiction Medicine and Family Medicine, and over the past 35 years, has established himself as one of the premier physicians working in the field of addiction. He is both a fellow and a member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and was named Outstanding Clinician by Addiction Magazine in 2010. A published author, Dr. Troncale has contributed content to both Saunders Manual of Medical Practice & When to Call the Surgeon, as well as numerous articles in addiction journals.

The Juvenile Court Judges’ Commission will, once again, honor both individuals and programs for outstanding service to Pennsylvania’s juvenile justice system.

Resource Day

The 2017 Pennsylvania Conference on Juvenile Justice will once again conclude with Resource Day. Conference participants will have an opportunity to learn about new, innovative, and creative approaches to working with juveniles and their families. We invite individuals representing public and private residential and community-based programs, technological products, and other relevant services available to the juvenile courts in Pennsylvania to meet with conference participants during this informal session that concludes the conference.
